It’s a good match for the hip-hop beats that underpin some of the best songs here, especially “My Prerogative,” which at the tim…

 A Colored Families Dream

A Colored Families Dream

$13.68

It is a culmination of experiences ranging from periods of feeling uncertain and overwhelmed. “I couldn’t sleep sometimes for the wounds were fresh.” And times I didn’t want to continue because I felt empty and nothing more to give and on the brink of discouragement. Then, I remembered walking out on the front porch where my granddad uses to speak with me. He uttered, Son, be a good boy and sit down and listen. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal and endowed by God to have certain rights without debate. And some of them are liberty, life, and a right to be happy! It’s, Coming! It’s, Coming! All men are born free and equal. Among them may be reckoned the right of enjoying and defending their lives and possession protecting the family. Daddy was always caught saying “Boys we got to keep the peace” he offered no provocation to make us enemies. Yet, I saw southern society treat our family so bad people left us no alternatives but servitude or death. We failed to understand that two kinds of justice were operating “down home” at that time.It seemed when men talk of liberty, they mean their own and seldom suffer thoughts to stray to their neighbors. The Colored men seem to suffer most interpersonally. I felt less than human and it made me angry and difficult to get along without adequate coping skills. So many minority men injured those closest to them.

Talbot Baines Reed (1852-1893) was an English writer who specialised in boys’ school stories, the most famous of which were The Fifth Form at St. Dominic’s (1881) and The Adventures of a Three-Guinea Watch (1883). Born in Hackney, London, Reed was the third son of Sir Charles Reed, who served as Member of Parliament for the borough. Reed’s family was also closely involved with the Religious Tract Society, which founded the Boy’s Own Paper, a periodical which published all of his stories. Reed more than any other late 19th century writer was responsible for the ensuing popularity of school stories in British children’s fiction. Although all of Reed’s school stories were first serialised in the Boy’s Own Paper, some of them were published in book form, both during and after the author’s life. Works include: My Friend Smith (1882), The Willoughby Captains (1883), Reginald Cruden (1885), Follow My Leader (1885), A Dog With a Bad Name (1886), The Master of the Shell (1887), Sir Ludar (1889), Roger Ingleton, Minor (1889), Tom, Dick and Harry (1892), Kilgorman (1894), Parkhurst Boys (1905) and Boycotted (1917).

Against All Odds: My Life of Hardship, Fast Breaks, and Second Chances

Against All Odds: My Life of Hardship, Fast Breaks, and Second Chances

$15.99

The extraordinary personal journey of a man who, against all odds, rose to become one of America’s most surprising and promising new political figures Scott Brown’s greatest win did not occur on a cold January election night in 2010 when he came from behind to capture the U.S. Senate seat held by Ted Kennedy for nearly fifty years. It began when he survived a savage beating at the drunken, dirty-fingernail hands of a stepfather when he was barely six years old, while trying to protect his mother. In this gripping memoir of resilience and redemption, Brown tells the story of his difficult, often nomadic childhood, shunted from house to apartment, and town to town, seventeen times over his first eighteen years. He somehow thrived despite a largely absent father, who married four separate times. So did his mother, in relationships frequently stained with alcohol, anger, and even violence. For nearly two decades’ growing up, Brown endured innumerable hardships and challenges, even stealing food to eat. He was periodically sent off to live with relatives, his possessions wrapped in a few old blankets. Saved by basketball, he was the boy who shoveled snow from the public courts to shoot hoops alone in the frozen cold. With clear-eyed conviction and unflinching can-dor, Brown tells the story of his own bad-boy days, of the coaches who mentored him, and of how he found a way out of familial chaos through the swish of a ball in the net, winning a starting slot on the Tufts varsity basketball team as a freshman player and becoming the tenth-highest scorer to graduate in the school’s history. His rise from there was even more improbable: a first-year law student and member of the Massachusetts National Guard, he was picked as Cosmopolitan magazine’s “America’s Sexiest Man” and was vaulted into the glamorous world of New York modeling at the height of the 1980s. But the man who was once ushered into the backrooms of
